PUBLIC ADVOCACY: My personal journey

April 30, 2014

JoyceMy personal Journey

Why do I care about others? You can’t understand or have empathy and compassion for others until you understand yourself. What makes me happy? What am I prepared to lose? What is my personal comfort zone?

When I closed Merit Carpets, Inc. , it was a decision that was overdue. I knew in 2010 I should sell or get out of business. I knew before that, but I couldn’t separate myself from my business. I had 1370 lbs of memories tied up in Merit, years of working with my family, growing up with the Business 24/7. We were once prosperous . I loved the action, I always liked ” the art of the deal”. My customers became my friends and the money was good. All pluses till the ” man made” financial crisis struck. Then , not only did the economic climate change but some of my clients changed as well. They became inhumane and prospered and the ones I liked  most and related to  fell into a non profitable state. Equity firms took over developers and the bottom line became more important then people. My guys/ skilled mechanics,  took a cut in pay equivalent to 57% of their previous salary and it wasn’t enough!

For years, once the recession started, I had a ” stomach ache” whenever I opened my office and warehouse!. It was a relief to finally close my doors.

I’ve found my vocation, I like to write, to learn, to educate. I’ve become a political ” animal” proselytizing about my beliefs where ever I go.

My own personal comfort zone depends upon my daily routines. I don’t like destruction of property or ” stuff” that doesn’t work. I have redundant systems in place to maintain my level of comfort.   I am flexible in the pursuit of life and happiness,  yet I have clung to my “stuff” , seeking “one constant” in a life of change.      When all else has failed , my home became my place of safety. Can I live else where with different stuff , Yes.   But, I prefer the integration of the “old” with the new!  The unknown makes me uncomfortable. I prefer to live with knowing, I can live with truth, I don’t like ” unknown, unknowns”.

Though I am not Mr.Henry Clay Frick, the industrialist and Art Collector,  who left his residence to the Public, I too , when the days are hectic, enjoy sipping a glass of wine and gazing at my stuff to relax!  It worked for him and it works for me.  There is something about Art and Beauty that brings us pleasure and reminds us of the best of Humanity!

Savor the moment, any moment or interlude in your own life that makes you feel safe and content. It’s a gift to block out the world, carve your own space and see or not see reality as you choose your own way of life and coping.  We are all the same, no matter where we are on the economic rung, we crave peace, caring, work and family.  Some of us are more human, more humane then others.  Thank God.  We can’t  preserve humanity unless we acknowledge our humanness!

Thanks for reading.  All the best to you, my dear reader.  My journey and yours continues!  Though I pursue my passions,  though I question everything and everyone, I never stop proselytizing about US and the salvation of the Middle Class!  Inequality and “the status quo” makes me Mad as Hell!

PS I’d like to acknowledge the John Kiley sculpture that frames my face! I’ll write about my Seattle and Detroit trips ; the cities,  the Artists visited and their new Glass Art ,  after several Public Advocacy Posts are Published… Enjoy!

PUBLIC ADVOCACY: The Solution resides with”we the People”

We the people

We the people, for the People

I’m outraged as I watch helplessly while “we the People”, are suffering, losing our dignity and our jobs.  Neither Party, except a dedicated few in Congress, is helping “we the People”, to overcome the demise of our Middle Class.  I’ve linked today’s NY Times article on the condition of Middle Class Americans compared to those in the Middle Class around the World.  Clearly we are not thriving.

Please read the article and you decide, how “we American’s have survived”?

Wake up and smell the coffee, the  GOP HAS AN AGENDA and  SO DO THE DEMS, and neither party, with the exception of a few,  is helping “we the people”.  The last bill out of the Roberts Court is heinous, but which group in Congress is stepping up to overturn Citizens United?  (Only Al Franken and Bernie Sanders and a few others support it’s overturn.    3/4 of the States  are required to vote to overturn a Constitutional Amendment.)   Justice Stevens at age 94 has proposed 6 Solutions to bring back our Democracy in his new book.  Ideology no longer matters, if wrong thinking and wrong decisions have led to the decimation of the Middle Class.  Read Justice Stevens recommendations for Constitutional amendments and, you dear reader, decide what would work “best” for our Country and you.

to ending our Market Society

It no longer matters who gave Rupert Murdoch, more then 30%of the media in this Country,  or why  Glass Steagall was overturned , and why  the revolving door between Government and Lobbyists, Legal enablers and Big Business was allowed ?  There is a long list of Laws that have been overturned to create the Corporate Welfare State.   In Great Britain, it has been suggested, that rather then the lawmakers maintain the status quo, they should do something and reinstate all the laws they overturned.  See The Economist, 4/5/14, “Britain’s Idle Parliament”.  I note this commentary, because it is applicable to US as well!

This Plutocratic society is pandemic. Circle the globe, inequality exists between the upper classes and everyone else as the Plutocrats seek to maintain the status quo. We are not living in a benevolent society, we are reliving the hard times of 1901 when Plutocrats ruled.   In 1901, Teddy Roosevelt used The Bully Pulpit and sought to overturn “the Trusts”.  He was not content to bear witness as inequality persisted.  This egregious state of inequality keeps reoccurring throughout history but always ends.   The only question is when.

Wake up America, this is not about right or left, this is about Plutocracy and the rights of “We the People”. Trust me, we are important or the large Corporations ,  Lobbyists and Big Money,  wouldn’t be paying Billions to elect officials. It pains me, that I couldn’t buy a Congressman, even if I wanted. I just don’t have a spare $3.6 million. LOL.  For proof of money influence, read The NY Times article below on Comcast’s use of money for Political Access!

http://nyti.ms/1piFw4O. NY TIMES 4/20/14 Comcast Political Influence

“We the people, for the people” had real meaning when I was growing up, not anymore. It’s not that we have no rage, it’s not that we don’t understand what has happened. We all know.  I have become the voice of “we the People”by using my bully pulpit;   “the voiceofjoyce.   I  bear witness and I advocate positive change for our Middle Class .  I hope that as I educate myself, I am  educating “we the people”, so that , as a group The Middle Class can organize and demand the changes in Society that reflect our needs.

It’s time to create an organization  stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific demanding the reinstatement of those laws, that reflect ” we the people, for the people. “. If we get behind one voice, we will restore our rights, we can no longer vote along Party lines, we need to vote for Laws that support us.

No more Plutocracy.   Time to say, good riddance , here and everywhere . Act locally think Globally, it’s the same players, going from one place to another, gorging themselves at the expense of  “We the People”.   They can run, but they can no longer hide .   Shine the light on all their activities; dark pools of money, their gambling at our expense. We have a Country to save and a World. We are all in this together since The Plutocratic way of life has been replicated everywhere. Luckily, space travel hasn’t taken off yet, or these folks would be off our dead planet, quicker then you can say “beam me up Scotty”. So they’re stuck on our dying planet too. They’ll have to be part of the Solution . This should be a wake up call for ” the younger generations”, our lives and yours depend upon you to organize for change .

Become involved when Politics effects us. We should be holding hands in unity from Sea to shinning Sea. I love this Country, I believed in Horatio Alger and didn’t think it was hokey , not then and not now. We have the power together to recreate our Nation. Believe it and work for it.

PUBLIC ADVOCACY: Time to move forward.

PUBLIC ADVOCACY: Time to move forward

April 19, 2014

images-5The Economist. 2009, and now 2014,  we’re still talking about the financial crisis development and the possible solutions for our time.   We are still enabling Bankers and the Banking system, while the rest of the Country remains stifled at the expense of a few. A privileged few. The Country has enabled this sector of the Economy at the expense of 300,000,000, who suffer in silence.   This is not the first time we the people have suffered at the expense  of The Banking Industry, unfortunately history repeats.  Why do ” we the people”  suffer in silence, I have no idea. Me personally, I’m Mad as Hell, but without the help of ” the younger voting block”, a real organization ” for the People, of the People”, I don’t believe my voice counts. I keep saying there are solutions and they do exist, but we need a powerful organization to start the process of encoding laws and selecting future candidates for office. One thing is evident from everything I’ve read, if we keep enabling The Banking system, we the People, will be bailing them out again, as unlimited money encourages unlimited risk. Conversely, no bailout, history shows produces, laws and calm for the Country for 50-70 yrs. Who among us wouldn’t want the Peace and time required to develop the job skills to move our Nation forward?

There are two years before the next real election cycle, it is time to organize and develop the laws of this land. Nothing is impossible if you have the willingness to work to make your dreams come true. I don’t believe in waiting a lifetime for change. We have the power  to create change , if we organize together.

Why NOW? Are you aware, 25 million kids receive food stamps ? The other 25 million on food stamps are mostly the elderly. How do we know, Eli Saslow, of the Washington Post , recently won the Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on the Food Stamp / Food insufficiency problems in America. So,  14 % of” we the people ”  starve as a few in Banking , Banking subsidiaries and Congressman become wealthy. Fair is a ” silly ” word.   I know nothing is fair, but egregious, that’s what we’ve created, an inequitable condition where only a few win at everyone else’s expense.

When “Politics effects us all”, isn’t it time to organize and reinstate equitable rules of Law and Regulation?  Speaking for myself, I’d rather be at the Head of the table, then anyone’s Lunch!

PUBLIC ADVOCACY: I don’t want to be anyone’s lunch!

April 7, 2014

We the peopleTHINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX:  Lobbyists have a seat at the “Political ” table, effecting the outcome of legislation independent of Political Parties. They represent entire industries to the detriment of the PUBLIC.   That’s their  function, support the rights of the industry they represent by influencing Congress to act on their client’s behalf.   Can their combined  action and the money expended in support of their industry be considered, bribery?  Since it is influence peddling at the highest levels of government?  Or is lobbying  a Monopoly or “Trust” since a group of individuals determine and may even write the laws favoring the rights of “their client” over the rights of “we the people”?

Can they be legally dismantled under anti trust laws?  Can the government official  accepting the money, or gifts be brought up on high crimes and misdemeanors?    Have we legalized bribery by “bending” the rules for campaign contributions?  According to Christopher Caldwell of the Financial Times, 4/6/14, ” The Roberts court has blinders, since the only corruption that is recognizable is a quid pro quo between a rich benefactor and the receiving Politician?  It is not like that .  More common is an inequality of access to politicians, about which Mr. Roberts professes himself unconcerned. ”

It’s a thought for debate.  This acceptance of Corporate  and Private Influence without restraint is pernicious.  The Roberts Court is disingenuous when stating inequality of access has not harmed , “we the People”!   What do you think?  Any ideas, besides waiting for Congressional legislation? LOL

“We the People” have become every ones’  lunch, it doesn’t give me a “warm fuzzy feeling”.   I prefer,  “We the people, for the people”.  You can’t convince me or Justice Breyer that Corporations are people with more rights then US!

Let’s review the latest erosion of the right’s of the People, those living on the edges, or those in the once prosperous middle class, no way you’re going to “buy” a Congressman.  In effect, we have trampled our Constitution, we no longer have one man one vote.  This government has wilfully trampled the rights of “we the people” and will continue to do so!  The only question remaining;  how long will” We the People,” tolerate being trampled upon?

PUBLIC ADVOCACY: Have Corporate Rights replaced Democracy?

April 7, 2014

Benito Mussolini20 years ago, as I was peacefully driving through the Berkshires with a friend, we had a philosophical conversation about Democracy and Democratic values.  To my partners surprise, I stated that the end of Democracy was Fascism.  Not realizing then,  1995 , was the seminal year for the reversal of most of our laws that kept Democracy intact.   During the last years of the Clinton Era, Glass Steagall, our Bible for Banking regulation was eviscerated and later “replaced ” by Dodd Frank, which allows the “Wall Street Casino” to exist.  Next, the 1946 and 1961 Lobbying Legislation was replaced by a new “disclosure act”,  which makes it difficult to determine who is a lobbyist and the amount of their influence.   This was the beginning of the erosion of Power of “we the People”, in favor of Corporate Interests.  The continued evolution of our Laws has allowed ” the Corporate State ” to exist .

What happens when the Power of  government  is married to the interests of the “large Corporation, the Global Corporation”?  Take a look at Benito Mussolini’s definition of fascism:  It is defined as the merger of state and corporate power.  Therefore, according to 20th Century Italians, the structure of fascism occurs when the government’ power is merged  with corporate economic power.  Have we become” FASCISTS”?!!

Most of our Laws since the mid 20th Century have favored the Corporation over the rights of the individual.  We rail against entitlements, while we give millions, billions and trillions to Corporations through tax breaks, we permit Lobbying Groups to influence Congressmen,  we allow  Legal enablers of the Corporation  to circumvent laws they helped write and now , with a stroke of the pen, the Supreme Court has legalized bribery of Public Officials.  What happened to government “by the People for the People”?

http://m.washingtonpost.com/blogs/govbeat/wp/2014/04/02/supreme-court-justice-breyer's dissent

http://nyti.ms/1lEJn9C A six figure check can now buy your representative? NY Times Opinion

We the people have no rights and soon we will have no liberty.  We will never be in a position to purchase our own representative on any level.  We can delude ourselves into thinking that States are separate from the Federal Government and will provide adequate and just services for the masses.  Dream on!   As long as Corporations have greater rights then We the People, We the People have no voice.     Stagnation exists for a reason.    The Powers  in place now,  haven’t figured out  how to carve up the entire pie without “killing us off too soon”.

Remember, Goldwater at the 1964 Republican Convention?   As he accepted the nomination for President, he stated, ” extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice!  And moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!”

Therefore, I challenge the 4 retired Presidents , with extensive staffs and the ability to do tremendous “good”,  especially President George H.W. Bush, to sit back and look at our Democracy and join with “we the People” and help reinstate the rules of Law, that would make “We the People, for the People”, our sacred creed,  once again!   What has been overturned by man, can be reinstated to benefit man!

What do you think dear reader?  We should make a choice to have a voice!  “We the People, for the People”, I think is something we all long for?
