There is an alternative to war?  However,  the Arab People have to want Peace and prosperity more then they want  to cling to the notion of  their State’s  Superiority  in the Middle East and elsewhere.  How much bloodshed will encourage ordinary people to rise up and say enough?   The Arab States have created ISIS, Al Qaeda , Hezbollah , Hamas, Al NUSRA , etc.

The Sunnis against the Shiites with Russia and now the US brought back into the fray. For what purpose? Unless you dissuade the Nation States from being “bad actors” on the world scene, you won’t rid the world of terrorism.

Fossil fuels have directly contributed to the rise of these newly wealthy World Players. The Saudis , the Iranians, the Qatari’s, have made a lot of money on the export of oil. They value their wealth and the power it brings.  They prefer War Games. Their people are pawns, as the ruling classes of these Countries retain their wealth.   These countries do not support moderates, they don’t support helping fellow Arabs out of poverty, they don’t support gender equality or education and job opportunities.

Sure, the Oxford or American educated elite of the Arab Nations are suave and charming and easy to talk to, but they are like the Janus mask, two faced. They appear perfectly reasonable while they fund terrorists activities. Each Arab World Player wants a sphere of influence in the Middle East.   It is obvious Middle Eastern Arab leaders don’t care how many fellow Arabs die.

If they cared about their Muslim brothers and sisters, they would fund real schools and invest in real businesses for the growth and well being of their  Middle Eastern constituencies.

I heard the Russian Ambassador speak on Bloomberg this morning and the moderator asked Lavrov, if he felt vindicated by backing Assad?  As a Politician, he evaded the subject.  However, let’s not forget that Syria’s civil war began after a drought and  people were starving.    Rather then understanding that the People were hungry, fighting broke out.  The denial  of civil liberties and food shortages gave rise to the extremist factions we are fighting today.  Were the borders controlled under Assad?   You bet.  Did Iran and maybe Russia, allies of each other and Assad,  fuel the flames of Civil Unrest by denying the needs of the  Syrian People?  It looks that way.  What was the outcome?  New Sunni Terror groups filling the void that was created by Assad when he failed to feed his people.

It’s sad to note:  Better the enemy you know, then the new one you create. There were no porous borders under Assad. Isn’t there away to meet with Russia, Syria and Iran and  all other factions involved to call a halt to the civil war that has been inflamed by them? Is there no way back from this abyss ? Isn’t there some way to offer food and water and rebuilding to this Country and then let the people decide who should rule? Isn’t anyone willing to try or to listen?

It’s too easy to bomb people back to the Stone Age.  The collateral damage is massive as people, antiquities, commerce and civilization ,  as we and they  know it, disappears.  Why not convene talks leading to a Unanimous cease fire? It would save the World’s people, stop the refugee migration and move toward stabilized Nation States.   The UN is in session this week, perhaps we can take hot air off their agenda and replace it with real decisions on Climate Change and the curtailment of War in the Middle East. As a New Yorker,  it would be refreshing to  expect more then grid lock in our City when the UN is in Session!

PUBLIC ADVOCACYY: AN Arab Morality Play with 3 Acts

Lincoln Center “The Plaza”

All the World’s a stage. If true, I don’t care how small my bit part is, I want to be a Player. Paying to be the audience sucks. It’s the opposite of real theater. In real theater, we pay for the performance and if we don’t like the actors, we can leave, throw rotten tomatoes, or give them a bad critique. Then the  play would close within 24 hours.

In real life. We watch the World’s players on our Global stage and we’re expected to stand mute. If we utter a word of dissent , it could literally ” be off with our heads”? What kind of play is that? When did the audience lose their rights?

Well, I don’t know about you, dear reader, I have a voice and I’m using it. I would urge all the World’s citizen’s to do the same. Who wants to be passive, when we are drawn onto the World’s stage . Might as well choose to be involved, because politics effects us all and ” we don’t want to lose our heads”!

Maybe the World was always like it is today, but we,  the audience hadn’t a clue? Now, with the advent of Social Media, we know what’s happening.   Just like ” all the women” hitting their heads against the Glass Ceiling, we are no longer content with understanding the status quo. We want what is our right?

Years ago, while working at Ford Motor Co, I noted  to myself that true equality for women would occur when a ” mediocre ” woman was paid the same as a ” mediocre” man.  Unfortunately,  after almost 40 years, women are still “hitting their heads against THE GLASS CEILING”.  Before, we didn’t know the ceiling existed.  Now we know and can’t do anything to break through it?

Which leads me to my next thought on my and your position in life?  Now that we have become  aware of our ” station” in life, we have the right to expect better from our leaders.    As Social Media has transformed our World views, our leaders remain stuck in the 20th Century and cling to the status quo.  This is unacceptable in a World that has become “smaller”, as all the World’s citizens begin to “see each other”?

The cycle of violence which dominated the 20th Century, should not be acceptable in the 21st.  It’s not too late.  Our Century is in it’s 14th year.  According to our scientists, we have 15 years to make meaningful decisions for the salvation of man.  Taking up the “club”, “bombing ” people out of exisitence is the “old way ” of dealing with problems.  Surely we can be more creative, more compassionate, when we want to preserve life and our Planet?

If our Arab brothers wish to distance themselves from the monsters they have created,  by acting in concert to destroy them:  that would help the World enormously.  The ” Caliphates” of old should not be able to flourish in this New World.    It’s time  to give up “old Scapegoats” and address the quality of Arab societies and the well being of their People,  before mankind goes extinct!

PUBLIC ADVOCACY: Decrease Carbons, Stop Terrorism!

Ice cap "calving" part of global warming process

Ice cap “calving”
part of global warming process

This week we witnessed the People’s Climate March in New York City.  Hundred’s of thousands Marched on 9/21/14.  The People’s Climate March could have larger ramifications then we thought.    Many groups  participated, including Patagonia, which  re-opened at 3PM,  after Marching.  This struck me as impressive., though it shouldn’t, their store depends on dedicated nature lover’s.     The  march was the coordinated effort of many groups worldwide.  “People”   resolved to participate and change our World. Now,  with the start of the UN’s assemblage , it would be “nice” if  this “political body” become the real politic and begin to address the World’s problems with real solutions.  After 50 years, it is time for this body or another, to stop debating and begin concentrating on resolving those issues that effect us Globally.

I recently read there were two types of polities in the World:

  • Expansionist Countries vs.
  • those Countries seeking to change the World through Education and people empowerment!

What do “We the People Want”? , when Politics effects us?  The People’s Climate March wants to reduce the Carbon footprint made by man and save man and resources from extinction.  But we can do more?  Follow my reasoning dear reader, as I propose to “kill two  birds with one stone”:  decrease our Carbon footprint, while we Stop Terrorism at the same time!

  • What do we want? A reduction of Carbon in the air! Less pollution, better quality of life, preserving our natural resources?  The list can be expanded…..
  • What supports the exponential rise of  Carbons? Fossil fuels
  • Who benefits from the production of fossil fuels? Many Arab Nations
  • What happens when the Arab Nation States become too wealthy? They decide to become geopolitical players.
  • What happens when those countries use their money? They impoverish their people and create Terrorists ,  Weapons of Mass Destruction and War.

To seek peace, prosperity and a long thriving Planet with it’s people, maybe it’s time to think about alternative fuels? We have approximately 7 Billion people whose lives depend upon us finding a better way to power our way to prosperity.   We have a voice, we have a choice, when Politics effects Us?

PUBLIC ADVOCACY: A call to action

September 16, 2014

Dear followers:  I just Published my latest Post ” Who can you Trust”!  Feel free to comment and join the group of concerned citizens forming to make our Society a better place.

Please offer your comments, but more then that, I want  to link up with people who have  similar ideas .   I can no longer exist in a vacuum.  It is time for me to join a larger group and expand the conversation  All of us using Social Media should be connecting the dots, linking our ideas globally and acting locally as agents of change.

If TedxEast works or The Idealist Network works or a Political Party is willing to be part of the impartial justice Teddy Roosevelt spoke about, I’m with you.  I stand for a level playing field.  I can handle competition, I can’t handle “this state of inequality”, which I believe will eventually destroy our Society and our Planet.

It’s time to connect the dots and connect all of us with good ideas into organized groups for change!  It’s great that we have organizations like The Brennan Law Center, or the Roosevelt Center, but we should be developing more then “expert” papers.  You and I know what our Country needs to prosper, we’ve done the reading and we’ve done the math.  Who will join me in converting thought to ACTION?  Who will ask me to join them?

I am not proud.  I want to be part of the solution!  I truly believe I can use my intelligence and judgement to help all of us !  If terrorists can use Social Media, as their call to action, why can’t I get a response from a few decent smart people to start a Network of People as change agents?  One person cannot make change happen, I can will it, I can write about it, but I can’t make you follow me or contribute to my thought process.  Only “you”, dear reader can take the next step.  Ask to join my group and let’s change the World together!

Thank you for listening and thank you for responding.  Joyce

PUBLIC ADVOCACY: Whose opinion can you trust?

September 16, 2014
From my desk to you: Dear readers 5/21/14

From my desk to you: Dear readers 5/21/14

Just when a lot of ” folks” think the NY Times non relevant on some topics, the Times comes up with a blockbuster investigation of ” respected” Think Tanks , provoking questions about expert advice. Who’s opinion can you “Trust”?   When foreign powers wish to be World players, they  influence research at Think Tanks.   As concerned citizens we have to wonder, how many elected officials and others relied upon these “experts” for data and analysis? The NY TIMES, 9/7/14 Article , is Linked to this site, raising many questions, which I hope,  will lead to answers and transparency on philosophical positions  held.

(“Prominent Washington think tanks, nonprofits known for their impartiality, have received tens of millions of dollars from foreign governments while pushing United States government officials to adopt policies that often reflect the donors’ priorities, an investigation by The New York Times has found.”)

For instance : We have to ask,  are Foreign Governments paying Colleges or making heavy donations to peddle their point of view? Are these governments behind the money and the force advocating BDS (Boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel, most recently) at select universities, here and abroad? How pervasive is foreign national money in Congress and who speaks for these entities?

Citizens United legalized bribery and influence, by narrowly defining bribery. It states,” bribery occurs only when money is given for a specific favor and exchanged at that time for the expected favor, a quid pro quo.” That’s not how bribery and influence works!   Money and gifts are given to individuals in Congress, with the expectation that Congressmen and women, will vote favorably when issues benefit the gift giver, whether that giver is a foreign national, a corporation , a lobbyist, etc.  It is very rarely, a quid pro quo!

The system has fallen apart, because the Power goes to a few organized activists who want their position heard at any cost. This is a subversion of Democracy.   It is not the  government envisioned by Teddy Roosevelt, “one that is impartial to all citizens under the law” .   In a society with an unequal balance of power , government by the people for the people is non existent. Since The People are disorganized , their votes cease to count. They are not the target of influence peddling, they become the victim.

Again who can you trust in a Society based on Money and Power and manipulation of the facts? As I’ve always said “the people ” need their own advocate, to ferret out the truth and to assure that sensible workable laws are written. Unless and until we trust such a person, we will never know if our Country is a Democracy? We will never know or be able to insure that our Country is running effectively, protecting the rights of  all citizens? We will never know if we are hearing true analysis or propaganda? We will never know if we are only enriching the military industrial complex, while we choose War over negotiation?

How do we know what to believe,if we can’t believe the data or analysis presented to us by our Government or ” the experts” or Commentators we listen to ? if we are not skeptical, we do so at our Peril.

Give me the chance to work for you in any capacity you choose?   Let me hire at least 10 people to connect ” the dots” and develop a real strategy for change in America. TEDX and ” The Idealist Network ” seem to have the right idea: while TEDX concerns itself with ” how ideas spread”, this new platform, “the Idealist network”,  appears to concern itself with taking an individual’s ideas and connecting that idea to others globally with similar ideas, creating a global network for change. This system can be used to communicate with others, to amplify ideas and to create replicable models and proposals to effect education and government through a networked organization. This sounds like an interesting concept, capable of networking Our World through the use of Social Media.

My proposal, requires a core group of activists to join together, using social media and all tools available to a tech savvy society, to connect the dots and develop laws based on existing ideas.  We will seek out pragmatic experts in the fields of Finance , Foreign Affaires, Education , etc and write the laws to safeguard our Country and others from further Financial Crises. I no longer want to read that Glass Steagall was 37 pages and the new litigious alternative may expand  to  30,000 pages? That is absurd!

I urge you to read the attached FT article by Martin Wolf providing a message to guide us: ” Keep it Simple”!
