PUBLIC ADVOCACY: My Journey and yours

I started writing my Blog in May of 2012, 5 yrs after the beginning of the Financial Crisis of 2008. No, I’m not counting deficient, I merely time the start of the Great Recession, with my Business cycle. In June of 2007,  3 months after signing another 5 yr lease with Merit’s landlord of 30 yrs, I knew we had entered a recession. Just like the recession of 1992, Merit’s phones stopped ringing.

It was the end of scheduling and planning for contracted work. Almost like death by a thousand cuts, we were asked to recalculate all our yardages ( Merit was primarily a carpet contractor, measuring units of installation in yards of carpet installed and invoiced accordingly.). Then,  we were asked to reduce our charges by 5%, reducing our profit margins.   Next we were told what our customers wished to pay. After 35 yrs, customer service was no longer anyone’s priority. The bottom line became our customers’ wish and demand. Take their pricing or leave the business.

Being me, I tried. I asked my mechanics to work with me, I couldn’t give up, nor could they. Was I happy?  No, I wasn’t happy.    Being a business woman, confronted with challenges, I was determined to stay in business and turn the Economy around for myself, for my workers, for the Veteran Community, for everyone. Since I worked by day, I started writing at night or whenever I had a free moment. I don’t like others dictating terms to me, that’s why I became a Small Business Entrepreneur.

I’ve lived by my own standard of ethics ,” I won’t look in your pocket and no customer should look in mine”. A win win in negotiations was something most of us had valued. My good friend and developer Henry  and I would always negotiate a deal. Neither one of us thought an anemic deal was a good deal. So we dealt fairly with each other and everyone else. We had old fashioned ethics and integrity .   I was really angry when I had to swallow my pride and profit in order to stay in business.

The Banks were bailed out as all of us on Main Street suffered. I became aware quickly, that we were entering an era of bubbles , man made disasters and short term thinking. I reasoned that the folks who got us into this mess, couldn’t have been too bright. If they were, they would have planned to avoid the ” bust”.   For 10 yrs. I listened but did not hear, Warren Buffett or Charlie Munger!   I had no idea, when they said events would get ugly, what that meant to me or my family or anyone else.  . Now I know!

I set out on a quest to educate everyone in the process, knowing that one person knowing both the reasons and solutions for the crisis is not enough. We all have to understand the Financial Crisis of 2008.   We can see it’s effects on the Middle Class!

  •  Mortgage Foreclosure
    Student loan debt
    Poor credit rating
High interest rates on credit card loans
The evaporation of loans for small businesses
    The loss of manufacturing
The rise of the financial equity business
No money for infrastructure at any level
Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan becoming homeless, committing suicide, surviving injuries beyond comprehension . Poor medical care
Under employed workers earning low wages.
Rise in food stamps and poverty levels
    Limited buying power

The list is long on suffering. Short on solutions to end  decades of wage and job declines. That’s when I knew, the people, who got us into this disaster were not so smart. Like the Emperor ‘s before them, they had no clothes. Stripped naked by the recession, I could see them  clearly and I knew I was their equal. Not in money, but in smarts. Like the” Pied Piper of Hamelin”,  I have set out to reason with the adults of our Fair land.  The status quo is not acceptable to me, not when I see the possible. But that’s not enough for me either, I want everyone to see the same dreams of  our success. One person can lead the way, but many must follow.

I present my ideas to you. , dear reader, as thoughts for debate. We don’t have much time , 2016 is our “drop dead date”. We should have one voice and one wish list, because, like it or not, Politics effects Us all. This time around, we want a Goldilocks government to protect us from the whimsy and risky behavior of others.

  • Let’s finally have a dialog. Let’s finally talk to our families and neighbors and all 300,000,000 get on the same page of the same program. I started by trying to change my world and in the process, as my journey evolved, I hope I am changing your World for the better, also. Knowledge is indeed power. We have choices, you have my voice and Politics effects us. We’ll get the life we deserve when we work together in pursuit of that life . My happiness is your happiness, we are connected. It’s never too early for a New Years resolution! I propose that this is a year of commitment to ourselves and each other to over turn the status quo and finally begin to Resurrect the Middle Class.

Thank you for your continued support.  I will write the news as I see it.  Hoping beyond hope, that positive change will come to all of US.   I am not going to live with the status quo any longer.  I will do whatever it takes to bring back our Middle Class.  I look forward to the next chapter in our journey, moving forward together, ” we the People will speak”.    All the best. Joyce

PUBLIC ADVOCACY; My thoughts on media and “man”& a need for Compassion

Dear reader: I read this post while categorizing my Posts prior to formatting them in eBooks. I hope you find this particular Post as relevant as I did. Enjoy, share and please comment. All the best. Joyce

This is the third week of reading the papers and finding almost nothing of importance , which is why, I’m more convinced then ever, that the social media and independent papers, composed of journalists ,  attorneys and people experienced in various industries will become the purveyors of news. Traditional news has become entertainment like everything else in commercial special interest media. As citizens we need to be informed. Whether we use Twitter, Word Press, Facebook , or self printing, Social Media can become the new home of investigative news.

We can broadcast daily through crowd sourcing.   I report on issues which concern me and  you my reader, my knowledge comes from individual “experts in the field”, or many journals.  I graze the news , as others would graze food, sampling many sources.  After the New Year it is my intention to expand my focus.    Through…

PUBLIC ADVOCACY: #Step up for Israel/Update on events in Jerusalem

Four Jews were killed and several more were critically injured in a terrorist attack in a Jerusalem synagogue, early Tuesday morning. Below is more information about the attack and suggestions for how you can show solidarity.

Image from Location in Har Nof

The two Palestinian suspects are residents of the East Jerusalem neighborhood Jabel Mukabaer. This morning, they entered the Kehilat Yaakov Synagogue with a pistol, knives and axes and went on a rampage, indiscriminately shooting and stabbing Jews in the midst of their morning prayers.

In response to this horrific tragedy, we invite you to take a moment and reflect about the lives and families that were shattered, and the impact of the increasing terrorism in Jerusalem.

To my readers:  Thanks for reading and if you have family or friends effected, I offer my sympathies.

PUBLIC ADVOCACY: Have the People spoken?

For two weeks I have been mulling over what to say to you, my “dear readers”.  I’ve questioned, “Have the People spoken”? By voting in the Republican Party, have the people chosen? Clearly, whether one argues that this was hardly a mandate, it is an acknowledged fact that The Republicans won.

Why did the Republicans win?  There are many reasons, but I’d like to present some of the reasons Republicans have gotten a clean sweep and became  the majority party.

  • Money in Politics according to The PBS News Hour , does bring in the votes. In every major win , money for TV ads swung the vote in favor of the candidate with the largest campaign war chest.
  • Possibly,  the People voted for The Republican Party because they admire those who have made money and wish, that they too , could be equally as fortunate?   Since” Hope springs eternal”,  maybe the Republican majority,  will remember their roots: The Party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Nelson Rockefeller . All had Democratic hearts and the Republican mindset for good government, “for the People, by the People.”

Looking back on the last 7 years of Gridlock, has been disheartening.  I’m  certainly not proud of our lack of Congressional vision.  The Democrats failed to deliver a just society to “we the people” who craved Financial Reform above all other matters of State.

  • 7 years and no end of the recession.
  • 7 years and the Financial Regulations written are incomprehensible and unenforceable .
  • 7 years of creating the appearance of a” Nanny state”  that gutted The Middle Class
  • 7 years of low wages, over work and more temporary jobs then most people prefer.
  • We have created customized government for the few when we should be creating good government ,  a “Goldilocks government ” !  Not too big, not too small, just right.    Remember the 80/20 rule of business?  Satisfy 80% of “we the people” and we can survive once again in the pursuit of our inalienable rights.

I cringe when ever I hear, we’ll wait for the Republican’s to leave office in two years? Or we’ll wait for the Democrats to take back all houses of Congress and by 2018 we’ll start to see progress?    Are we so jaded that we would push 7 years of this status quo  into a decade of stagnation?  That’s what’s predicted for Europe.  A lost decade!  What about the needs of “we the people”?  How much longer do you want to wait while the Financial crisis still continues to loom large in our lives and effect us daily?   According to NPR, based on their informal polls, Financial Regulation and Reform is the #1 topic of importance to the American Public.   For AMERICA to create a stratified economic and more just society we need sensible regulation.

  • Too bad we wasted so much time on Dodd Frank, it’s time for someone to reread it and pare it down to manageable law.
  • The same is true of the Affordable Healthcare Law. A great idea, good for Society, but now we need to tweak it for ease of use and affordability for everyone.
  •  Citizens United, an interesting concept ,  that works better then expected.  It does in fact verify that more money in Politics,  buys more votes .  It selects the Candidate with the largest campaign war chest and the “best” TV ads.  It would be better, if the People with money, chose their candidate and raised the money for that candidate with minimal candidate participation?    Why waste time and money?   It takes only  a couple of hours to create good commercials, then insert the candidate where ever needed.   Or use social media and cut down on costs? The objective, Legislators work on the “People’s business”, not fund raising .   Sarbane’s had a better idea and so did  McCain Feingold .

I’ve lived too long with my foot straddling the middle and  lower upper classes to know that there are a lot of People out there missing out on Society. I know people are unemployed, under employed, there is fraud at all levels of Society. Now it’s time to join with The Republican majority and speak  for the changes, “we the people” in the Middle Class want.

.  While attending conferences this fall, many folks said they were concerned about President Obama’s legacy?   If you really care about Obama, do not remain silent.  If you really care about America, do not remain silent.  The “Silent Majority”, all 360,000,000 of us have the Power to change our world,

If you  stay securely in your milieu, everything stays the same. But if you really care about changing our world , we can do it. Why waste another minute?

Are you with me for yourselves, for Obama, for the Republicans and for our Country? We have choices to make, now.

I will continue to help you  understand how Politics effects us and link Web sites to my Blog that I think bring issues of concern to the forefront.  If you love and revere America,  Our Democracy,  let everyone in Government know what’s important to you.  A concerted effort by all of us is mandated. Let’s work together, whether Democrat,  Republican or Independent,  to make the country we want with the people we have elected.   You have my voice, it is your choice, when Politics effects us.

PUBLIC ADVOCACY: Step Up for Israel & Jerusalem

My Grandson & I touring Israel 2011
My Grandson & I touring Israel 2011

Today’s Step Up For Israel call with Israel Police Foreign Press Spokesman, Superintendent Micky Rosenfeld, where he briefed us on the security situation in Jerusalem.

While the police and security services are doing a heroic job at trying to curb the terrorist attacks and rioting that is taking place here in Jerusalem, many people feel helpless and angry, and are wondering “what can we do to make a difference”?

Jerusalem U encourages you to Step Up For Israel and counter the negative and untrue narrative – that Jerusalem it is a tinderbox of extremist aspirations waiting to explode, or a place where religious freedom is being suppressed by the government. Allowing these false perceptions to remain unchallenged gives them legitimacy.

There is a critical role that each of us can play in the battle for the perception of Jerusalem, both abroad and within Israel. Here are a number of ways that you can Stand Up For Israel and Jerusalem:
