We.are.in.crisis.mode. If Trump and Congress fail to act in August, the ACA and 13 million people may suffer immediately. As the August deadline approaches, Congress should immediately reinstate the following ACA POLICES to maintain competitiveness in the insurance marketplace.
- The Individual Mandate: All consumers, including young healthy people, should enroll and pay it forward. You never know when you will require medical care or medical care for a loved one. Wouldn’t you want to know that you had helped to deliver less expensive health care to your family through your generosity? Wouldn’t you want your kids to do the same for you when you’re older? Pay it forward. It will make you feel better! More importantly, studies have shown that we must start preventive health care early in our lives. Parents should take their child in for annual pediatric and young child checkups through the teen years. Unlike other countries that practice preventive care, we generally do not and as a consequence our health outcomes have been considerably lower. And an additional bonus, when you have healthcare coverage under the ACA, preventive care is free!
- Pay it forward…I did that yesterday. Standing outside a NYC theater with no cabs in sight, I was approached by a woman requesting to share a ride. Sure I said, though she went to Chelsea and I went to Lincoln Center. She paid the cost of her round trip and I made a new friend! It was a win-win for both of us.
- The Insurance Subsidies: Insurance Companies are paid through July ONLY. They must be renegotiated this August. Congress should use this time wisely to add multiple carriers to every State.
- Advertising for the new member enrollment in November should be occurring now to assure ease of enrollment through a greater understanding of exchange availability in all States. As we speak, the Dept of HHS has taken down all advertising sites for the ACA. Why should such mean-spiritedness be occurring. 88% of Americans want the ACA. Make it accessible for sign up and participation in healthcare benefits.
If Congress can resurrect a bipartisan bill to sanction Russia, Iran and North Korea, they can cross the aisle once again to benefit the American people. Congress knows Americans value healthcare, why not come together and agree to work within the existing framework and make a high quality, less costly system for all Americans. This could be a win-win that unites our Country! “We the People” would be proud and happy to know that we do have taxation with representation. The House Bill is far too “mean”, as described by the President himself. The Senate bill and its revisions do not have enough votes, in addition to the fact that it throws millions off healthcare and has been rejected by a majority of Americans. Repealing without replacement is also a loser and does not have enough Republican support.
Besides healthcare, Congress is now faced with raising the debt ceiling and creating a budget. They can’t afford to be looking at tax cuts for the wealthy. “We the People” are watching and waiting for pragmatic legislation to emerge. I hope they don’t let this opportunity pass. Americans need education, good paying jobs and Infrastructure NOW. I recognize this is a difficult era for Congress. However, Americans want to see bipartisan bills helping the poor, the working poor and the middle class. And it is time this Congress puts their heads together and does the work of bipartisanship!
I don’t believe the Country can afford more entitlements for big business and the wealthy. Welfare for the wealthy has destroyed our country over the last thirty years. We have developed an indolent class, and I’m not referring to the poor! The wealthy have ceased being creative and have blocked the creation of new industries. They’ve become content to take their cash and do nothing. That’s not good enough for “We the people”, not when the need is so great: jobs, healthcare, housing, and national infrastructure investment.
How many in Congress are ready to tax the wealthy and create a Society that is fair and equitable? It’s time to dedicate all our efforts toward those in our country who are less well off, the poor, the working poor, and the middle class. Why not? We have a voice and we’re ready to make choices on our behalf. We now recognize that Politics affects us!
