The 2019 Charter Revision Commission has spent the last thirteen months reviewing the City Charter – our city’s constitution – in order to explore changes that could potentially improve our local government structures and processes. After hearing directly from New Yorkers and community leaders like you, as well as conducting in-depth research and consulting with experts, the Commission has proposed a set of changes for New Yorkers to consider and vote on this fall in the general election.
On November 5th, 2019, New Yorkers across the five boroughs will have the chance to vote on five ballot questions that could change our local election system, how police officers are held accountable, how the city budget is set, government ethics rules, and how land in the city is developed. These are extremely important issues and we need your help ensuring that all New Yorker voters play a role in making these decisions by voting.
We invite you to join us at our upcoming Community Information Sessions and ask that you encourage other leaders, advocates, family members, friends, and neighbors to attend as well! Attached, you’ll find flyers that can be easily shared via e-mail, social media, and by printing and posting in community spaces (printer friendly flyers attached). Our information sessions are open to the public but we’d love to know which community boards, grassroots organizations, faith communities, civics groups, and other leaders will be attending! We know September is an incredibly busy month for everyone but wanted to start our information sessions as soon as possible so community leaders are equipped with neutral information about the proposals and helpful materials to share with your communities from the very start. We are actively working on making our outreach materials available in 14 languages, including English, and will be adding translations to our website as they become available. Currently, you can find the Commission’s final report, the ballot questions, abstracts, and fact sheets (and many of the translations) on our website at: https://www.charter2019.nyc/july.
