(Photo by Yiqing Wang)Few training programs, growing demand: Virginia struggles to fill dental hygienist jobsVirginia’s shortage of dental hygienists is straining dental care across Hampton Roads, leaving patients waiting months for cleanings and forcing dentists to take on routine tasks. 

While Virginia has plenty of dentists, the state produces fewer than 150 hygienists a year — far short of the nearly 1,000 needed. Few schools offer programs and instructor pay can’t compete with private practice.

That could impact home sales in Hampton Roads.The ongoing government shutdown has halted the National Flood Insurance Program, preventing new and renewed policies and threatening to stall home sales in flood-prone areas across Hampton Roads. 

Local realtors say delays could worsen if the shutdown continues, since flood insurance is required for most buyers in federally designated, high risk flood zones.
