The Blueprint Was Written in Her Office
We talk a lot about Project 2025 as a future threat, a theoretical blueprint for dismantling democracy. But for voters in Florida, it isn’t a theory. It is a memory. And the person who wrote the opening chapter is hiding in plain sight.
Before Laurel Lee was a Congresswoman representing Florida’s 15th District, she held a different title. She was Ron DeSantis’s Secretary of State.
She was the person hand-picked to oversee the machinery of Florida’s elections. And what did she do with that power? She treated the voter rolls like a target list.
Laurel Lee was the “Project 2025 Secretary” before the project even had a name. Now, she is in Congress, serving as the Chair of the Subcommittee on Elections. She isn’t there to protect your vote; she is there to take the Florida playbook national.
1. The Architect of Suppression
Laurel Lee wants you to think she is a “moderate” Republican. She wants you to focus on her polite demeanor and forget the chaos she orchestrated. But her record proves she is a partisan enforcer who built the machine they are now trying to export to the rest of the country.
During her tenure as Secretary of State, she oversaw the implementation of Senate Bill 90 (SB 90), one of the most draconian voter suppression laws in the country.
- Criminalizing Water: She enforced a law that made it a crime to hand out water to voters waiting in long lines.
- The Drop Box Purge: She oversaw the restriction of ballot drop boxes, making it harder for working people to vote on their own schedule.
- The Website Crash: In October 2020, on the final day of voter registration, the state’s website crashed under her watch. Instead of immediately extending the deadline to ensure everyone could register, she hesitated, causing chaos and confusion.
When democracy was on the line, Laurel Lee didn’t stand up for the voters. She stood up for the system that was trying to silence them.

2. The Convenient Resignation
In May 2022, in the middle of a chaotic election cycle that included new, controversial maps, Laurel Lee abruptly vanished from her post. She resigned as Secretary of State without warning.
Why? To run for Congress in the newly drawn 15th District.
She helped oversee the department that managed the maps, and then she quit to run in the district those maps created. It is the ultimate insider move. She treats public office not as a service, but as a ladder.

We have a choice between two very different skill sets. Laurel Lee specializes in subtraction, removing voters, removing rights, and removing guardrails.
