Trump was Russia’s man, from the Kremlin perspective, from the beginning. The Kremlin had every reason to believe, a decade ago, that a Trump presidency would be in their interests, as a delivery vehicle for chaos and weakness in the US. The Russian official press made it obvious in 2024 that Trump was their great hope for victory in Ukraine. Whatever other lures Russia might have, the simple fact of prior support, combined with his personal vanity, is enough.
