MORE TO KNOW

  • A new court ruling would block the current use of the National Guard to fight crime in Memphis. But for now, that decision is on hold while the government has time to respond. The ruling sides with Democratic officials who argue the governor cannot deploy the guard for unrest unless there’s a rebellion or invasion.
  • Vanderbilt’s LifeFlight service remains grounded after a deadly crash that killed a nurse earlier this month. The service says it has been on a safety stand down since while performing inspections, debriefing crew members, and conducting what they call “confidence flights.”
  • Tennessee’s maternal and infant health trends continue to disappoint. According to the latest report from March of Dimes, the state had the highest rate of death tied to childbirth in the country in 2024. Authors suggest Tennessee could improve through policy changes like expanding Medicaid, increasing access to doulas, requiring paid family leave and improving postpartum depression screening.
