Urge  Governor Hochul to Sign our Medical Aid in Dying Act

New York is poised to become the 12th state to expand end-of-life options after both houses of the State Legislature approved our Medical Aid in Dying Act, or MAID (S138) this past legislative session. We now must encourage the Governor to sign our landmark bill into law before the end of the year. If you’re supportive, please consider adding your name to this letter urging Governor Hochul to sign MAID into law.

62 of Our Bills Passed this Legislative Session

The 2025 legislative session concluded in June and I’m happy to report that the Senate passed 62 of my bills. In addition to MAID (discussed above), some of my other bills that passed both the Senate and Assembly include:

  • The SUPPORT Act(S1744) – requires non-felony defendants found unfit to proceed to trial be connected with services and resources for their long-term stability. Assembly Member Simone was a great partner in working to pass this bill.
  • The Trans Shield Act(S4914) – strengthens protections for reproductive health and gender affirming care providers, patients, and helpers from out-of-state prosecutions by protecting sensitive healthcare information.
  • The Rent Algorithms Act(S7882) – makes it unlawful for landlords to use algorithm-driven services which effectively result in collusion between landlords on rent-related decision-making (e.g., getting recommendations based upon private information about rent histories shared by other landlords). I am proud to have worked on this legislation with Assembly Member Rosenthal.
  • The Jack Reid Law(S4544) – expands bullying and harassment protections to students in private, religious or denominational educational institutions pursuant to the Dignity for All Students Act which currently only applies to public schools.
  • The E-Wills Act (S7416) – allows New Yorkers to electronically sign and witness wills.
  • The LLC Transparency Act (S8432) – ensures domestic companies still comply with New York disclosure laws after the Trump administration issued a rule to limit the application of federal law to only foreign companies.
  • The Tenant Rent Check Act (S3845A) – caps the fees a residential tenant may pay for a bounced check to a landlord to the greater of the landlord’s costs or $20.
  • The HIV/AIDS Prior Authorization Act(S5534) –  prohibits the State Medicaid program from requiring preauthorization for antiretroviral medications used for the treatment of HIV or AIDS (similar to private insurance). I am thankful to Assembly Member Rosenthal for passing this bill in the Assembly.
  • The Penn South Act(S7780) – allows Penn South to reduce its shelter rent payments to the lesser of five percent of shelter rent or taxes paid between 2000-2021, whichever is less, providing Penn South with the same tax treatment as Mitchell-Lamas. I was glad to pass this bill with Assembly Member Simone.
