Michigan’s independent music venues contributed $1 billion to the state’s economy last year despite the industry’s profitability problems, according to a first-of-its-kind report by the National Independent Venue Association.
Why it matters: NIVA hopes the data motivates policymakers to support legislation like capping ticket resale prices and establishing state-backed live music performance funds to help indie venues survive.
By the numbers: According to the report, Michigan’s independent venues generated $2 billion in total economic output while adding $1 billion to the state’s GDP.
- The spending created $100.4 million in state and local tax revenue and supported nearly 15,000 jobs.
- Overall, independent venues in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., generated $153.1 billion in total economic output in 2024, while supporting more than 900,000 jobs.
Yes, but: Only 36% of the nation’s independent venues were profitable last year.
- NIVA attributes the unprofitability to inflation, anti-competitive practices by larger promoters and predatory ticket resale practices.
The big picture: It’s a gritty time for indie music venues. NIVA categorizes independent venues and music festivals as those not owned by a multinational corporation or a publicly traded company.
- The live music industry is dominated by corporate giants like Live Nation and AEG.
- Independent venues in major cities are also facing escalating real estate costs.
Zoom in: Michigan’s independent venues include Detroit’s Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre, The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor and The Crofoot in Pontiac, according to NIVA.
The intrigue: Owners of the Willis Show Bar, a decades-old venue in the Cass Corridor, recently put it up for sale.
- The bar’s owners want to maintain the bar’s history and creative spark, but they’re now based in Los Angeles, Crain’s reports.
- “Willis is as much an independent music venue as one can be,” co-owner Steve Livigni wrote to Axios via email. “Without the network or infrastructure of a bigger operator, it really needs someone on the ground there doing the work to put together great shows.”

President Trump selectedentrepreneur Mark Savaya, known locally for his plentiful cannabis billboards, to serve as special envoy to Iraq.
The big picture: Trump picked Savaya for his “deep understanding of the Iraq-U.S. relationship, and his connections in the region,” the president wrote on Truth Social.
- Trump added that Savaya was a key part of his reelection campaign in Michigan, helping “secure a record vote with Muslim Americans.”
State of play: Savaya’s local Leaf & Bud cannabis dispensary chain includes locations in Detroit, Center Line and Hazel Park.
- Savaya of Birmingham was born in Iraq and is part of Metro Detroit’s Chaldean-American business community, per the Detroit News, and was congratulated on his selection by the Chaldean Center of Chicago.
What they’re saying: Savaya thanked Trump on his Instagram Sunday, writing that he’s “deeply humbled, honored and grateful” and will work to strengthen the two countries’ partnership.
- Many other posts on Savaya’s page feature him speaking to or posing with the president.
Context: Senate confirmation is needed for special envoys if they exercise significant authority under federal law, according to the Free Press, but they can also serve temporarily without confirmation.
Between the lines: A Detroit City Council member called out Savaya last year over what she described as an oversaturation of cannabis advertisements —including Leaf & Bud’s billboards, flying plane banners and digital truck ads, per Crain’s.
- A Leaf & Bud attorney told Crain’s the company designs its ads not to appeal to minors, which was a top concern.

An Andiamo Italian Chophouse restaurant will anchor the hotel being built on the former Joe Louis Arena site.
Why it matters: The longtime local brand that’s part of the Joe Vicari Restaurant Group will open at the JW Marriott Detroit Water Square, set to debut in January 2027, according to a news release.
Catch up quick: The 600-room, 25-story hotel will be attached to downtown’s Huntington Place convention center by a pedestrian skybridge.
- A new high-end apartment tower, the Residences at Water Square, opened last year on the site.
Between the lines: Other Andiamo chophouse locations are in Las Vegas, Clinton Township and Fenton.
- The Andiamo location at Water Square will seat 200 indoors and also feature outdoor riverwalk seating in warmer months.
